❖ Ruling on Prostrating (Sujood) on a Cap or Cloth During Salah ❖
Is the prostration (sujood) valid if the forehead touches a cap, turban, or cloth rather than directly touching the ground?
Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir (حفظه الله)
Yes, the sujood is valid if one’s forehead is covered by a cap, turban, or cloth, and does not directly touch the ground.
However, it is preferable (afḍal) for the forehead to touch the ground directly, in accordance with the Sunnah.
Narrated Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه):
“We used to pray with the Prophet ﷺ, and when the ground became hot, we would spread our garments and prostrate on them.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 385)
This indicates the permissibility of using a cloth due to necessity such as heat.
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (رحمه الله) said:
“Some of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ would prostrate on their turbans.”
(As-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī: 2447)
✔ Sujood on a cap, cloth, or turban is valid, and the prayer is complete.
✔ It is permissible when needed (due to heat, cold, etc.).
The preferred Sunnah is to place the forehead directly on the ground, without a barrier.

➤ Ruling: Sujood Is Valid with a Covering
Yes, the sujood is valid if one’s forehead is covered by a cap, turban, or cloth, and does not directly touch the ground.
However, it is preferable (afḍal) for the forehead to touch the ground directly, in accordance with the Sunnah.
Evidences
1. Hadith from Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī:
Narrated Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه):
“We used to pray with the Prophet ﷺ, and when the ground became hot, we would spread our garments and prostrate on them.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 385)
2. Practice of the Companions (Ṣaḥābah):
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (رحمه الله) said:
“Some of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ would prostrate on their turbans.”
(As-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī: 2447)
Scholarly Conclusion (Muftā bih Rāy):
- If there is a genuine excuse such as heat, cold, or hardness of the ground, then prostrating over a cap, turban, or cloth is permissible.
- Without a valid excuse, it is better to place the forehead directly on the ground.
⚠ Caution from the Ṣaḥābah:
- ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه) disliked unnecessary prostration over a cloth or head covering without need.
This reflects the priority of adhering to the prophetic method in sujood.
Summary:
✔ Sujood on a cap, cloth, or turban is valid, and the prayer is complete.
✔ It is permissible when needed (due to heat, cold, etc.).
