Ruling on Excessive Spreading of the Body in Sujood
Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām
Is it permissible to spread the body excessively while in the position of sujood during prayer?
Excessive spreading of the body in sujood is against the Sunnah. None of the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) who described the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ ever mentioned that he would stretch out his back in sujood.
However, in rukūʿ, it is authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ kept his back straight and extended.
Conclusion:
In sujood, maintain the posture of lifting the abdomen from the thighs and keeping the body composed, without unnecessary spreading.

The Question
Is it permissible to spread the body excessively while in the position of sujood during prayer?
Answer
Excessive spreading of the body in sujood is against the Sunnah. None of the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) who described the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ ever mentioned that he would stretch out his back in sujood.
However, in rukūʿ, it is authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ kept his back straight and extended.
The Sunnah Method in Sujood
- In sujood, the Sunnah is to keep the stomach lifted above the thighs.
- The body should be gathered in rather than spread out excessively.
- Some people overly extend their bodies in sujood — this is contrary to the way of the Prophet ﷺ.
Conclusion:
In sujood, maintain the posture of lifting the abdomen from the thighs and keeping the body composed, without unnecessary spreading.
