❖ Question:
If a son-in-law commits adultery with his mother-in-law, what is the ruling regarding his marriage? Will he receive the punishment prescribed for a married adulterer?
❖ Answer by Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir (حفظه الله):
Ruling on the Marriage:
In such a case, the son-in-law's marriage with his wife will remain intact.
Evidence:
The statement of Sayyiduna ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAbbas (رضي الله عنهما):
"إن الحرام لا يحرم الحلال"
["What is unlawful (ḥarām) does not make what is lawful (ḥalāl) unlawful."]
[Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl]
This means that an act of sin does not nullify a valid marriage.
⚖ Prescribed Punishment:
The son-in-law will receive the same punishment as a married adulterer, as per Islamic legal rulings.
