Can a Husband Separate His Bed from His Wife During Menstruation?

Taken from: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

Can a husband separate his bed from his wife during her menstrual days?

❖ Answer:

There is no need to separate the bed during menstruation. If someone does so merely because the wife is in menstruation, then this is an ignorant practice and a reprehensible innovation.

Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) narrated:
بينا أنا مع النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم، مضطجعة فى خميصة، إذ حضت… فاضطجعت معه فى الخميلة

“I was lying with the Prophet (ﷺ) under a blanket when I got my menses. I quietly slipped away and took my menstrual clothes. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked: ‘Have you started menstruating?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ He then called me, and I lay down with him under the blanket.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 296, Sahih Muslim: 296)

Imam Ibn al-Nahhas (رحمه الله, 814H) said:
هذه بدعة مكروهة، مخالفة للسنة

“This is a disliked innovation and contrary to the Sunnah.”
(Tanbih al-Ghafilin, p. 475)

However, if a man separates his bed out of fear that he may not control his desire and might end up having intercourse, then in such a case, there is no harm in doing so.
