❖ Question:
Is it possible in our times to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream? And if someone claims to have seen him, what is the reality of such a claim?
All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:
Yes, it is possible to see the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in a dream, but this is conditional upon seeing him in his actual, authentic form.
"Whoever sees me in his sleep has indeed seen me, for Shayṭān cannot imitate my form."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 6994, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2266)
"Whoever sees me in a dream shall see me while awake, and Shayṭān cannot take my likeness."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 6993, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2266)
If a person sees the Prophet ﷺ in his authentic, described physical appearance, then he has truly seen him.
This was more likely for the Companions (رضي الله عنهم), as they had directly seen and recognized his features.
In later times, such dreams must be evaluated against the Qur’an, Hadith, and understanding of the Salaf.
Although Shayṭān cannot appear in the exact form of the Prophet ﷺ, he can deceive by coming in another form and falsely claiming to be the Prophet ﷺ.
Hence, validation by scholars and Islamic principles is necessary.
If a person does not have sound beliefs and still claims to see the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, his dream holds no religious value.
This part of the ḥadīth —
"He shall see me while awake" — may have two interpretations:
① It refers exclusively to the Companions (رضي الله عنهم), since they had seen him in reality and thus could again see him in wakefulness.
② It is a promise of seeing the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment, meaning the one who sees him in a dream will surely see him in the Hereafter.
It is incorrect to believe that the Prophet ﷺ can appear to people in wakefulness in the present day, as there is no evidence in the Qur’an or Sunnah for his return in this worldly life.
❖ Seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a dream is possible, only if he is seen in his true form.
❖ Shayṭān cannot imitate his form, but can deceive in other forms.
❖ Such dreams must be evaluated by scholars in light of Qur’an and Sunnah.
❖ The phrase "he shall see me while awake" either applies to the Companions or to seeing the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment.
❖ It is not possible for anyone to see the Prophet ﷺ in wakefulness in our era.
Therefore, if someone claims to have seen the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, he should consult knowledgeable scholars, and analyze the dream according to Shar‘i principles, so as not to fall into misguidance or fitnah.
وَاللهُ أَعلَمُ بِالصَّوَابِ
May Allah grant us true guidance and keep us firm upon the authentic Sunnah.
