Ruling on Saying Salaam During Adhan or Khutbah in Islam

Is Saying Salaam During Adhan or Khutbah Permissible? – Complete Explanation

Source:
Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur'an and Hadith, Vol. 01

Question:

Is it permissible to say "Assalamu Alaikum" during Adhan or Khutbah?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾammā baʿd:

If a person says “Assalamu Alaikum” during the Khutbah, there is no objection to it.
✿ The reason is that replying to this greeting does not cause any hindrance in listening to the Khutbah.
✿ Moreover, during the Khutbah, a reply can also be given through a gesture, which is also considered a valid response.

As for saying “Assalamu Alaikum” during the Adhan,
✿ There is absolutely no harm in replying to it, as the mention of responding to the Adhan is also found.
✿ This does not affect listening to the Adhan because the Mu’adhdhin elongates the words, allowing the listener to hear the Adhan in its entirety.
