Question
What is the ruling on saying Āmīn upon reciting or hearing the last verse of Sūrat al-Baqarah during prayer?
Answer
Saying Āmīn upon reciting or hearing the last verse of Sūrat al-Baqarah during prayer is not established.
Scholarly Consensus
❀ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (رحمه الله, d. 463H) said:
قد أجمع العلماء على أن لا تأمين فى شيء من قراءة الصلاة إلا عند خاتمة فاتحة الكتاب
“The scholars are unanimous that there is no saying of Āmīn in any recitation during prayer except at the end of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.”
(al-Tamhīd 7/10)
Note
❀ It is reported about Sayyidunā Muʿādh ibn Jabal (رضي الله عنه):
كان إذا قرأ آخر البقرة : ﴿وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ﴾ قال : آمين
“When he recited the last verse of Sūrat al-Baqarah: ﴿وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ﴾, he would say Āmīn.”
(Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah 7979)
But the chain is weak:
① It contains an unnamed narrator.
② It includes Abu Isḥāq with ʿanʿanah.
In prayer, saying Āmīn after the last verse of Sūrat al-Baqarah is not authentically proven. The only legislated place for Āmīn in recitation is after completing Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.
