Ruling on Sajdah al-Tilawah for Women in Istihādah

Should a Woman in Istihādah Perform Sajdah al-Tilāwah?

Taken from: Fatāwā Amanpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amanpuri

❖ Question:

Should a woman experiencing Istihādah (non-menstrual bleeding) perform Sajdah al-Tilāwah?

❖ Answer:

Yes, she should. Istihādah is an illness, not menstruation. A woman in Istihādah is considered pure, and all rulings applicable to a normal woman apply to her as well. Authentic Ahadith and the consensus of the Ummah affirm this.

◈ Scholarly Consensus

Hafiz Nawawi رحمه الله (676H) stated:
أما الصلاة والصيام والاعتكاف وقراءة القرآن ومس المصحف وحمله وسجود التلاوة وسجود الشكر ووجوب العبادات عليها فهي فى كل ذلك كالطاهرة وهذا مجمع عليه

As for Salah, fasting, I‘tikaf, recitation of the Qur’an, touching and carrying the Mushaf, Sajdah al-Tilāwah, Sajdah al-Shukr, and all obligatory acts of worship, the woman in Istihādah is like a pure woman. There is consensus upon this.
(Sharh al-Nawawi, 4/17)

❀ Likewise, ‘Allamah Ibn al-‘Attar رحمه الله (724H) also transmitted this consensus.
(al-‘Uddah fi Sharh al-‘Umdah, 1/264)
