Ruling on Performing Umrah Multiple Times in Ramadan

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

Repeatedly performing Umrah in the month of Ramadan is discouraged (makrūh), as doing multiple Umrahs in a single month goes against the practice of the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥīn (pious predecessors).

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله stated in his Fatāwā that:

By the consensus of the Salaf, excessive repetition of Umrah is disliked, especially in the month of Ramadan.

Practice of the Salaf

If multiple Umrahs in one month were a recommended or virtuous act, the Salaf — who were the most eager in performing acts of worship — would have done so. However, their practice does not show that they performed Umrah repeatedly in Ramadan.

Practice of the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ, who was at the highest level of piety and righteousness, stayed in Makkah for nineteen days during the year of the Conquest of Makkah.
During that time:

◈ He prayed shortened (qaṣr) prayers.
◈ He did not perform Umrah.

When ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها insisted on performing Umrah, the Prophet ﷺ instructed her brother, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr رضي الله عنهما, to take her outside the Ḥaram so she could enter into Ihram for Umrah.
However, the Prophet ﷺ did not instruct ʿAbd al-Raḥmān رضي الله عنه himself to perform Umrah.

If repeating Umrah was a Shariah requirement or strongly recommended, the Prophet ﷺ would have advised him to do so. Likewise, the Companions رضي الله عنهم would have given it importance.

Interval Between Two Umrahs

Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله said:

“He should wait until his hair grows back and turns black again.”

Meaning, one should not perform another Umrah immediately after completing one, but wait until enough time has passed for hair to regrow visibly — indicating that a reasonable duration has elapsed.

(This is my opinion, and Allah knows best what is correct.)
