❖ Rulings on Repeating ʿUmrah and Shaving the Head (Ḥalq) ❖
Answered by: Fadīlat al-ʿĀlim Khidr Ḥayāt Ḥafiẓahullāh
If a person performs ʿUmrah and then intends to perform another ʿUmrah a day or two later, but has already shaved his head (ḥalq), how should he perform ḥalq again when there is no hair left?
This situation did not arise during the time of the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions, which indicates that they did not frequently perform ʿUmrah one after another in such a manner.
However, if someone chooses to perform multiple ʿUmrahs in quick succession, the following guidance applies:
✔ Prefer trimming (qaṣr) instead of shaving (ḥalq) in the first ʿUmrah.
This ensures that some hair remains for trimming or shaving in the subsequent ʿUmrah(s).
That way, the condition of hair removal can be fulfilled meaningfully each time.
✔ But if the person already performed ḥalq in the first ʿUmrah and then performs another ʿUmrah while the head is still bald:
He may go to the barber again and pass the razor over the scalp once more.
This act will still count as fulfilling the ritual of ḥalq, even if no actual hair is cut, as the ritual action is still being symbolically completed.
In shāʾ Allāh, this will be valid and acceptable.
➤ Repeating ʿUmrah in short intervals was not the common practice of the Salaf.
➤ For those doing so:
— Prefer qaṣr first, then ḥalq later.
— If already shaved, then symbolically pass the razor again.
