Shariah Limits on Satellite Dish Installation in Rental Agreements
Written by: Saudi Fatwa Committee
If a person owns a house, rest house, camp, or similar property, and someone wishes to rent it, but the owner knows that the tenant will install a satellite dish—which is something that corrupts beliefs, morals, and manners—then it is not permissible to rent it to him.
However, if the tenant intends to live there and the landlord does not know that he will install a dish, and after moving in the tenant installs it, then the rental contract remains valid.
When the rental period ends, the landlord may then say: “Either remove the dish or vacate the property.”
As for the ruling on payment: if the rental itself is haram, then the rent received is also haram.
