Ruling on Removing Hijab Before Non-Mahrams Due to Husband’s Threat

❀ Ruling on Unveiling Before Non-Mahram Relatives Under Husband’s Pressure ❀

Source:

This article is derived from the book “500 Questions and Answers for Women” based on the fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

I married a man who, after the marriage, demanded that I not cover my face in front of his brothers. He threatened me with divorce if I refused.
What should I do in this situation, as I fear being divorced?

❖ Answer:

It is impermissible for a husband to compel his wife to appear unveiled before non-mahram men.
He should not allow his wife to expose her face before his brothers, uncles, or their sons, as all of these are non-mahram relatives.

✘ Such behavior is strictly forbidden in Islam.
If the husband imposes such a condition, the wife is not obligated to obey him in this matter.

✅ Obedience is only due in matters of righteousness.
A woman is obligated to observe hijab, even if that means facing the consequence of divorce.

If he insists and follows through with divorce, then Allah will provide her with something better, In shā’ Allāh.

❖ Qur'anic and Prophetic Guidance:

Allah ﷻ says:

﴿وَإِنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا يُغْنِ اللَّـهُ كُلًّا مِّن سَعَتِهِ﴾
[Surah An-Nisā’: 130]

“And if the two separate, Allah will enrich each of them from His bounty.”

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"من ترك شيئًا لله عوضه الله خيرًا منه"
[Al-Durar al-Muntathirah by Suyūṭī]

“Whoever gives up something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better.”

Allah ﷻ also says:

﴿وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّـهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ يُسْرًا﴾
[Surah At-Ṭalāq: 4]

“And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him ease in his affair.”

If a wife observes hijab and seeks to uphold chastity and modesty, her husband should never threaten her with divorce for adhering to the commands of Allah ﷻ.

May Allah protect us from all harm.
