Question:
If a person has artificial teeth, is it obligatory to remove them during wudu when rinsing the mouth?
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!
- If a person has artificial teeth, it is not obligatory to remove them during wudu.
- Such teeth are similar in ruling to a ring worn on the finger.
- During wudu, removing a ring is not obligatory; at most, it is recommended to move it slightly so water can reach underneath — and even that movement is not compulsory.
Evidence:
- The Prophet ﷺ used to wear a ring, yet there is no narration that he removed it during wudu.
Reasoning:
- Artificial teeth create even more difficulty in removal than a ring.
- For some, removing and reattaching them is a hardship.
- Based on this, Shari‘ah does not require their removal during wudu.
It is permissible to perform wudu without removing artificial teeth.
