Is it legislated (shar‘an) to recite Salawat (Durood) before and after the Adhan?
✦ Reciting Salawat (Durood) after the Adhan is legislated and supported by authentic Hadith.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed:
"Then send blessings upon me."
This occurs after responding to the Adhan, as taught in the Sunnah.
ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"When you hear the Mu’adhdhin, repeat what he says. Then send blessings upon me. Verily, whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold."
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Salat, Bab Istihbab al-Qawl Mithl Qawl al-Mu’adhdhin)
This Hadith clearly establishes the virtue and legitimacy of sending Salawat after the Adhan.
However, the practice of reciting specific versions of Durood in a set, chanted, or collective manner after the Adhan, as practiced by certain groups, is not proven from the Qur’an and Sunnah. Such additions or formalizations fall under non-legislated innovations if they are perceived as obligatory or consistent ritual.
Thus:
① Reciting Salawat after Adhan is established Sunnah.
② The Prophet ﷺ encouraged it for each individual, following the Mu’adhdhin.
③ Inventing specific wordings or group recitations is not from the Sunnah and is discouraged.
④ There is no evidence supporting reciting Salawat before the Adhan.

✿ Evidence from Hadith:

✦ Regarding Specific Wordings or Collective Recitations:

Such additions or formalizations fall under non-legislated innovations if they are perceived as obligatory or consistent ritual.
Thus:
- Sending Salawat individually after Adhan is Sunnah.
- Adding fixed phrases or group styles is not from the Prophet's ﷺ practice.
✔ Summary:
① Reciting Salawat after Adhan is established Sunnah.
② The Prophet ﷺ encouraged it for each individual, following the Mu’adhdhin.
