Shar‘i Ruling on Reciting the Qur’an in Rukū‘ and Sujūd
Based on: Fatawa of the Scholars of Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Vol. 1

❖ Question

Is it permissible to recite any supplicatory verse from the Qur’an during Rukū‘ (bowing) or Sujūd (prostration)?

❖ Answer

No, it is not permissible to recite the Qur’an in Rukū‘ or Sujūd.

❖ Evidence from Hadith

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"أَلَا وَإِنِّي نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَقْرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ رَاكِعًا أَوْ سَاجِدًا، فَأَمَّا الرُّكُوعُ فَعَظِّمُوا فِيهِ الرَّبَّ، وَأَمَّا السُّجُودُ فَاجْتَهِدُوا فِي الدُّعَاءِ، فَقَمِنٌ أَنْ يُسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ"
(Sahih Muslim)

Translation: “Beware! I have been prohibited from reciting the Qur’an while bowing or prostrating. As for Rukū‘, glorify your Lord in it. And as for Sujūd, make abundant supplication, for it is most likely to be accepted.”

❖ Ruling

✅ Reciting the Qur’an, including supplicatory verses, is prohibited in Rukū‘ and Sujūd.
✅ Instead, one should recite authentic Dhikr and make Du‘a as taught in the Sunnah.
✅ These positions are meant for glorifying Allah and humble supplication, not for reciting Qur’anic verses.

❖ Summary

Reciting Qur’anic verses in Rukū‘ and Sujūd is not allowed.
✔ The Prophet ﷺ explicitly prohibited this practice.
✔ Worshippers should confine themselves to prescribed remembrances and supplications in these positions.
