Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 516

❖ Question

Is it permissible to recite Duʿā’ al-Qunūt before rukūʿ while keeping the hands folded, and is there any ḥadīth or practice of the Companions رضي الله عنهم supporting this?

✿ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

◈ In Qiyām al-Layl by al-Marwazī, it is mentioned that from some of the Companions رضي الله عنهم it is established that Duʿā’ al-Qunūt was recited before rukūʿ while keeping the hands folded.

◈ Our teacher and grand-teacher, Shaykh al-Kull Ḥaḍrat Maulānā Muḥammad Muḥammadth Gondalwī رحمه الله, wrote in his fatwā:

“Duʿā’ al-Qunūt before rukūʿ and after rukūʿ are both reported from the Companions رضي الله عنهم (see: Juz’ Rafʿ al-Yadayn). Reciting Duʿā’ al-Qunūt before rukūʿ while keeping the hands folded has also been narrated from some of the Companions (see: Qiyām al-Layl).”
(al-ʿAbd Muḥammad Gondalwī, 14/2/236)

✅ Conclusion

◈ Duʿā’ al-Qunūt may be recited both before rukūʿ and after rukūʿ.
◈ The practice of reciting it before rukūʿ while keeping the hands folded is indeed reported from some Companions رضي الله عنهم.
