Ruling on Raml During Ṭawāf: When and How to Perform It

❀ Ruling on Raml and Its Specific Place in Ṭawāf ❀

🖋 Written by: Shaykh Mubashshir Ahmad Rabbānī ḥafiẓahullāh

❓ Question:

In which Ṭawāf is Raml necessary?

✅ Answer:

Raml refers to a brisk, energetic walk with short steps, resembling a light jog.

Raml is Sunnah for men only, and that too only in the first three circuits of the initial Ṭawāf performed upon entering Makkah for Ḥajj or ʿUmrah.

➤ The remaining four circuits should be performed with a normal walking pace.

🕋 Authentic Report:

ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrated:

“When the Prophet ﷺ came for Ḥajj or ʿUmrah, in the first Ṭawāf he performed, he would jog (do Raml) in the first three rounds and walk normally in the remaining four. Then he would pray two rakʿahs at Maqām Ibrāhīm, and then perform Saʿī between Ṣafā and Marwah.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ḥajj: Bāb Istilām al-Ḥajar al-Aswad, ḥadīth 1603]

📚 Scholarly Consensus:

Imām an-Nawawī رحمه الله has reported consensus of the scholars and jurists on this matter:

Raml is prescribed in the first Ṭawāf only, and specifically in the first three circuits.
[al-Fatḥ ar-Rabbānī 12/23]
