What is the ruling on raising the hands during Du‘ā al-Qunūt in Witr, and is there any authentic marfūʿ ḥadīth regarding the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) saying Āmīn behind the Prophet ﷺ?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
As far as I know, there is no marfūʿ ḥadīth explicitly mentioning raising the hands during Du‘ā al-Qunūt in Witr.
However, in the book Bulūgh al-Amānī, a narration is cited from Sunan al-Bayhaqī regarding Qunūt al-Nāzilah, in which the raising of hands is mentioned.
It is narrated in Sunan al-Bayhaqī:
"ʿAnas (رضي الله عنه) saw the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ perform Qunūt in the morning prayer, and both of his hands were raised while he was supplicating against those people who had martyred his Companions (رضي الله عنهم)."
(Sunan al-Bayhaqī, Vol. 2, p. 211)
◈ Both Qunūt al-Nāzilah and Qunūt al-Witr are supplications within prayer.
◈ Since raising the hands is clearly mentioned in a marfūʿ narration about Qunūt al-Nāzilah, it can likewise be practiced in Qunūt al-Witr.
This matter can be understood through analogy:
◈ There is no explicit, authentic, and clear marfūʿ ḥadīth stating that the Prophet ﷺ recited “Subḥānaka Allāhumma” in Ṣalāt al-Janāzah or instructed it.
◈ However, since Ṣalāt al-Janāzah is also considered a form of prayer and structured like obligatory prayers, all people recite “Subḥānaka Allāhumma” in it.
