Ruling on Qasr in Fajr and Maghrib Prayers

Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 520

❖ Question

Is the Fajr and Maghrib prayer also subject to qasr (shortening)?

✿ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Fajr (two rakʿāt) and Maghrib (three rakʿāt) are not shortened.
◄ The authentic aḥādīth clarify that qasr applies only to the four-rakʿah prayers — namely Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, and ʿIshāʾ.
◄ Thus, Fajr will always remain two rakʿāt, and Maghrib will always remain three rakʿāt, even during travel.

✅ Conclusion

Qasr is exclusive to four-rakʿah prayers.

  • Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, ʿIshāʾ → shortened to two rakʿāt.
  • Fajr → remains two rakʿāt.
  • Maghrib → remains three rakʿāt.
