If a person intentionally performs Salah without clothing while having the means to wear them, their Salah is invalid and will not be accepted. Allah ﷻ commands in the Qur’an:
"يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ"
(Surah Al-A‘raf: 31)
"O Children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid."
There is consensus among scholars that if a person has the ability to wear clothing and prays without it, their prayer is null and must be repeated.
If one’s clothes are impure (e.g., soiled with urine, blood, or other impurities), praying in such clothes is not permissible, and the Salah is invalid.
It is obligatory to ensure:
If a person knowingly or unknowingly prays in impure clothing, their prayer must be repeated.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Allah does not accept prayer without purification."
(Sahih Muslim)
In case someone prays without proper purification (wudu or clean clothing), they should repent and perform the prayer again, as Allah ﷻ is the Most Forgiving.
✔ Praying in impure garments is not allowed, and the prayer must be repeated.
❖ Question:
What is the ruling on performing Salah while unclothed or wearing impure (najis) clothes?❖ Answer:
Your question has two parts, concerning Salah ① without clothes and ② in impure garments. Each is addressed in detail below:① Praying Without Clothes
Islam sets a specific standard of clothing during prayer, based on the principle of covering the ‘awrah (private parts):- Men’s ‘Awrah: From the navel to the knees.
- Women’s ‘Awrah: The entire body except for the face and hands (though some scholars recommend covering these during prayer as well).
② Praying in Impure Clothes
Purity is a fundamental requirement for Salah, encompassing the body, clothing, and the place of prayer. If one’s clothes are impure (e.g., soiled with urine, blood, or other impurities), praying in such clothes is not permissible, and the Salah is invalid.
It is obligatory to ensure:
- Proper wudu
- Clean garments
If a person knowingly or unknowingly prays in impure clothing, their prayer must be repeated.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Allah does not accept prayer without purification."
(Sahih Muslim)
In case someone prays without proper purification (wudu or clean clothing), they should repent and perform the prayer again, as Allah ﷻ is the Most Forgiving.
❖ Summary:
✔ Praying unclothed while having the means to wear clothing invalidates the prayer.✔ Praying in impure garments is not allowed, and the prayer must be repeated.
