The Prayer of a Lone Individual Behind the Row is Invalid
✍ Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori
A person praying alone behind a row does not have a valid prayer, although he should still begin the prayer immediately. If someone joins him, that is ideal. Otherwise, he must repeat the portion he prayed alone.
➊ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wabisah bin Maʿbad رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man praying alone behind the row:
فأمره أن يعيد الصلاة
"He ﷺ instructed him to repeat the prayer."
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 633, Book of Salah: Chapter on a Man Praying Alone Behind the Row; Tirmidhī: 231; Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār: 1/393; Bayhaqī: 3/104]
➋ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ṭalq bin ʿAlī رضي الله عنه that:
لا صلاة لمنفرد خلف الصف
"There is no prayer for the one who prays alone behind the row."
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Mājah: 822, Book of Establishing Prayer: Chapter on Praying Alone Behind the Row; Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl: 2/328; Ibn Mājah: 1003; Aḥmad: 4/23; Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār: 1/394; Bayhaqī: 3/105; Ibn Abī Shaybah: 2/193; Ibn Khuzaymah: 1569]

[Subul al-Salām: 2/593]
❶ Firstly, the narration is weak.
[al-Ḍaʿīfah: 922]
❷ It also contradicts the Hadith:
"أتموا الصف الأول"
"Complete the first row."
[Abū Dāwūd: 671]
❸ And falls under the warning:
"من قطع صفا قطعه الله"
"Whoever breaks a row, Allah will cut him off."
✔ Ibn Taymiyyah & Ibn Bāz رحمهم الله:
One should not pull someone from the front row, as the narration is weak.
[Taʿlīq ʿala Subul al-Salām by Shaykh ʿAbdullah Basām: 2/595]
✔ Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله:
Due to the weak narration, no one should be pulled from the row. However, if a person prays alone, his prayer is valid.
