Ruling on Praising Someone Behind Their Back

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

What is the ruling on praising someone behind their back?

❀ Answer:

✦ It is encouraged to praise someone behind their back, while praising them to their face is discouraged or even forbidden, according to the Prophet’s ﷺ instruction.
However, even when praising behind their back, the praise must be truthful, without exaggeration, and not fabricated. Such praise is considered testimony in the person’s favor, and must reflect reality and integrity.

✿ Hadith Evidence:

Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه narrated:

People once passed by with a funeral procession, and the companions praised the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"It has become obligatory."
Then another funeral passed, and they spoke ill of the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ again said:
"It has become obligatory."
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه asked:
“What has become obligatory?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
"The one you praised—Paradise has become obligatory for him. The one you spoke ill of—Hellfire has become obligatory for him. You are Allah’s witnesses on the earth."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 686)

✿ Legal Principle:

  • Praising someone behind their back is commendable, provided it is truthful.
  • Praising someone in their presence may lead to arrogance or self-conceit, which is why the Prophet ﷺ discouraged it.
  • Such praise functions as a testimony, so accuracy and sincerity are essential.

✔ Summary:

① Praising someone behind their back is permissible and virtuous, as long as it is truthful and moderate.
Praising to the face is discouraged, as it may lead to self-conceit, unless done in a beneficial way.
③ This practice is considered a testimony, and should reflect honesty and reality.
