Question
What is the ruling on pig fat and its other parts?
Answer
All parts of the pig are ḥarām and impure. It is not permissible to benefit from any of them.
Qur’ānic Evidence
Allah ﷻ says:
“…or the flesh of swine, for indeed, it is filth.”
(al-Anʿām 145)
Scholarly Consensus
❀ ʿAllāmah al-ʿAynī al-Ḥanafī (رحمه الله, d. 855H):
“The pronoun ﴿فَإِنَّهُ﴾ refers back to the pig itself, which means that all of its parts are impure.”
(Minha al-Sulūk, p. 48)
❀ Imām Ibn Ḥazm (رحمه الله, d. 456H):
“The scholars are unanimous that the flesh of the pig, its fat, grease, cartilage, marrow, and nerves are all forbidden, and all of them are impure.”
(Marātib al-Ijmāʿ, p. 23)
❀ Imām Ibn al-ʿArabī (رحمه الله, d. 543H):
“The Ummah is unanimous that the flesh of the pig, in all its parts, is forbidden.”
(Aḥkām al-Qurʾān 1/80)
❀ Imām al-Qurṭubī (رحمه الله, d. 671H):
“The Ummah is unanimous on the prohibition of pig fat. The term ‘meat’ in the Qur’an includes fat, because meat with fat is also called ‘meat.’ Allah has forbidden the flesh of swine, and this includes its fat, as fat falls under the general meaning of meat.”
(Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī 2/222)
By the Qur’an, Sunnah, and ijmāʿ, all parts of the pig—including its flesh, fat, grease, cartilage, marrow, and nerves—are absolutely forbidden and impure.
