Ruling on Physical Intimacy with a Menstruating Woman (Excluding Intercourse)

Authored by: Imran Ayub Lahori
Is physical intimacy allowed with a menstruating wife apart from intercourse?
Answer:

Yes, it is permissible and allowed, as proven by the following Ahadith:
The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:

『صنعوا كل شئ إلا النكاح』

“Do everything (with a menstruating woman) except intercourse.”
[Taqaddam Anfaʿ]
A man asked the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم:
“My wife is menstruating. What is permissible for me with her?” The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم replied:

『ولك ما فوق الازار』

“It is permissible for you whatever is above the lower garment (waist-wrapper).”
[Sahih: Sahih Abu Dawood 197, Book of Purification: Chapter on Pre-ejaculatory fluid; Abu Dawood 212]
Sayyidah ʿA’ishah رضی اللہ عنہا reported:
“When any of us was menstruating and the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم wanted to have physical intimacy with her, he would instruct her to wrap herself with a waist-wrapper. During her period, he would then have physical intimacy with her.”
[Bukhari 302, Book of Menstruation: Chapter on Physical Intimacy with a Menstruating Woman; Ahmad 6/173; Darimi 1/242; Muslim 293; Abu Dawood 268; Tirmidhi 132; Ibn Majah 635; al-Ihsan by Ibn Hibban 2/467; Bayhaqi 1/310; Sharh as-Sunnah 1/411]
