Ruling on Performing Sunnahs During the Congregation of Fajr

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Discussion on Ṣalāh, Vol. 1, p. 213

❖ Question:

If the congregation (jamāʿah) of Fajr has already begun, and there is enough time for a person to pray the Sunnah rakʿahs — should he perform the Sunnahs first and then join the congregation, or should he join the congregation immediately?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!

In this situation, one should join the congregation first and perform the Sunnahs later.

✦ Evidence

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

«اِذَا اُقِيْمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلَا صَلَاةَ إِلَّا الْمَكْتُوبَةُ»
"When the iqāmah for prayer is given, then there is no prayer except the obligatory one."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb Ṣalāt al-Musāfirīn, Bāb Karāhiyyat al-Shurūʿ fī Nāfilah baʿda Sharʿ al-Muʾadhdhin fī Iqāmat al-Ṣalāh)

✅ Conclusion

  • Once the iqāmah has been called, it is prohibited to begin Sunnah or nafl prayers.
  • The Sunnahs of Fajr may be prayed after the congregational Farḍ, provided it is before sunrise.
