Question

Is it permissible to perform salah on a prayer mat or carpet that has decorative patterns?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh. Ammā ba‘d:

It is permissible to pray on a prayer mat or carpet that has designs or patterns.

However, it is better to avoid such mats and carpets because decorative patterns can distract a person and reduce focus in prayer.
Complete attention of the heart and mind towards Allah ﷻ is preferred in salah, and unnecessary designs may cause the worshipper’s concentration to be disturbed.
