Ruling on Performing Salah During Intense Sleepiness

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

If someone is overwhelmed by sleepiness, should he perform the prayer first or complete his sleep, regardless of whether it is Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, or Isha?

❀ Answer:

✦ In the case of obligatory (fard) prayers, the person should try to wake himself up—such as by splashing water on the face or taking a bath—and then perform the prayer.
However, if the prayer is optional (nafl), then he may sleep first and offer it upon waking.

✿ Guidance from the Sunnah:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"When one of you becomes drowsy while praying, let him lie down and sleep until he no longer feels sleepy. For one who prays while drowsy may not know whether he is seeking forgiveness or cursing himself."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Wudu, Bab al-Wudu min al-Nawm; Sahih Muslim, Kitab Salat al-Musafirin, Bab Amr man Na‘asa fi Salatihi)

This Hadith highlights the importance of alertness and presence of mind during prayer. Performing prayer in a drowsy state is discouraged, especially if it affects understanding and intention.

✿ Encouragement for Night Prayer:

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

"May Allah have mercy on the man who gets up at night to pray and awakens his wife to pray. If she does not wake up, he sprinkles water on her face. And may Allah have mercy on the woman who gets up at night to pray and awakens her husband to pray. If he does not wake up, she sprinkles water on his face."
(Abu Dawud, Kitab Qiyam al-Layl, Bab Qiyam al-Layl)

This Hadith shows gentle encouragement to help one another in worship, even in times of sleepiness.

✿ Avoiding Excessive Burden in Nafl:

The Prophet ﷺ once saw a rope tied between two pillars in the mosque. He asked about it and was told that it belonged to Zaynab رضي الله عنها, who used it to hold herself up when she became tired during prayer.
The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Untie it. Let each of you pray as long as he is active. When he becomes tired or sluggish, let him rest."
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab Salat al-Musafirin, Bab Amr man Na‘asa fi Salatihi bi an Yarqud)

This shows that even in voluntary worship, one should avoid burdening oneself beyond capacity.

✔ Summary:

① In obligatory prayers, wake yourself up and perform the prayer with alertness—even if it requires washing the face or taking a short break.
② If the prayer is nafl (voluntary), it is better to rest and pray later with full focus.
③ The Prophet ﷺ encouraged praying with presence of mind and discouraged praying while drowsy or mentally absent.
