If someone is overtaken by sudden worry or cannot concentrate due to stress, should they first try to resolve their worry or perform the prayer?
✦ If the time for prayer has begun, then one must proceed to pray.
Allah ﷻ says:
إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا
(Surah al-Nisa: 103)
"Indeed, the prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed times."
Prayer is a time-bound obligation, and no worldly concern—however great—should lead to its delay or abandonment.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whenever faced with difficulty or sorrow, would immediately resort to prayer.
It is narrated:
"Whenever the Prophet ﷺ was troubled by a matter, he would turn to prayer."
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Salah, Bab Waqt Qiyam al-Nabi fi al-Layl; Musnad Ahmad)
Ali رضي الله عنه narrated:
On the night of the Battle of Badr, all of us slept, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained in prayer throughout the night, immersed in supplication and worship until dawn.
(Musnad Ahmad: 1/138)
When Ibn ʿAbbas received the news of his brother Qutham's death during travel, he recited:
"إِنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ",
then stepped aside from the path, made his camel sit, and offered a long prayer before continuing on. After the prayer, he recited:
وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى الْخَاشِعِينَ
(Surah al-Baqarah: 45)
"Seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive."
In moments of pain, loss, or mental burden, the believer is taught to find relief and strength in prayer. The remembrance of Allah helps dissolve the intensity of worldly worries.
① If the time for prayer has begun, one must perform it without delay, even in distress.
② The Prophet ﷺ and his companions turned to prayer as a refuge during hardship.
③ Salah provides spiritual comfort and draws the heart away from worldly troubles.
