Is it permissible to perform Sa’i before Tawaf?
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
When it comes to the Sa’i of Hajj, performing it before Tawaf al-Ifadah is permissible.
This is based on an incident from the time of the Prophet ﷺ during the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Naḥr). While the Prophet ﷺ was present, people came to ask him about various sequence-related issues in the rites. One man said:
“I performed Sa’i before Tawaf.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
«لَا حَرَجَ»
“There is no harm.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth: 1734; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth: 1306; Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Ḥadīth: 2015)
❀ If a person performing Hajj Tamattuʿ carries out the Sa’i of Hajj before Tawaf, there is no problem.
❀ If a person performing Ifrād or Qirān did not perform Sa’i with Tawaf al-Qudum, and later performs Sa’i before Tawaf al-Ifadah, it is also valid.
In all these situations, the ruling of the Prophet ﷺ — “no harm” — applies.
