Ruling on Performing Obligatory Prayers Near the Mosque but Outside It

❀ Ruling on Performing Obligatory Prayer in an Office Near the Mosque ❀
Taken from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, p. 257

❖ Question:

Some of our brothers have established an office near the mosque where the adhan is clearly audible. Yet they choose to perform their obligatory prayers inside the office, despite the mosque’s proximity.
Is their prayer valid? What is the Shar‘i ruling on this matter?

❖ Answer:

Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

✿ Virtues of Congregational Prayer (Ṣalāh in Jamāʿah)

Islam emphasizes the great virtue and reward of praying in congregation, as established in authentic hadiths:

Reward in Congregation:
“The reward of a prayer offered in congregation is 27 times greater than that of a prayer offered individually.”
(Muwaṭṭaʾ Imām Mālik 1/129 | Bukhārī 645 | Muslim 650)

✿ Congregational Prayer as a Shar‘i Obligation

Some authentic narrations indicate that praying in congregation is not just virtuous — it is wājib (obligatory).

From the Prophet ﷺ:

"Whoever hears the adhan but does not come (to the mosque), then there is no prayer for him unless he has an excuse."
(Ibn Mājah 793 | Mustadrak Ḥākim 1/245 | Bayhaqī 3/57)

➤ Authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī on the conditions of Bukhārī and Muslim.

✿ Warning Against Abandoning Congregation Without Excuse

This hadith clearly shows that offering prayer away from the mosque without a valid excuse is impermissible.

✿ Incident of the Blind Companion

ʿAbdullah ibn Umm Maktūm (رضي الله عنه), a blind companion, asked the Prophet ﷺ for permission to pray at home.
The Prophet ﷺ asked:

"Do you hear the adhan?"
He replied: "Yes."
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Then come to the mosque."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 653)

➤ If even a blind man was instructed to attend the mosque, then those who are healthy and able-bodied are even more responsible for doing so.

✿ Practice of the Companions

ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿūd (رضي الله عنه) said:

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us to pray in the mosque where the adhan is called."
"If you begin praying at home as this person does, you will abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ. And if you abandon his Sunnah, you will go astray."

(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 654)

✔ Conclusion

❖ If the adhan is audible and the mosque is nearby, then offering the obligatory prayer inside the office is not validly permissible from a Shar‘i perspective.
❖ The prayer may be technically valid but falls short of fulfilling the obligation of jamāʿah.
❖ These brothers should perform their farḍ prayers in the mosque to adhere to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and avoid religious deviation.
