Ruling on Performing ʿUmrah During the Months of Hajj

Source: Fatawa 'Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1

What is the ruling on performing ʿUmrah during the months of Shawwal, Dhu al-Qaʿdah, or Dhu al-Ḥijjah, particularly when one also intends to perform Hajj?

ʿUmrah may be performed on any day of the year, including the months of Hajj. There are no specific days designated for ʿUmrah. Therefore, it is permissible to perform ʿUmrah even during the months of Shawwal, Dhu al-Qaʿdah, and Dhu al-Ḥijjah, regardless of whether one intends to perform Hajj or not.

It is important to note that Hajj is performed in three forms:

Ifrad (مفرد) — Hajj alone without ʿUmrah
Qirān (قران) — Hajj combined with ʿUmrah under a single ihram
Tamattuʿ (تمتع) — Performing ʿUmrah first, exiting ihram, and then entering a new ihram for Hajj

For Qirān and Tamattuʿ, ʿUmrah is included along with Hajj, and in both cases, sacrificial offering (qurbani) becomes obligatory.

However, in the Ifrad form of Hajj (where only Hajj is performed without ʿUmrah), no sacrifice is required.
