Question

What is the ruling for someone who, due to ignorance, omits Tawaf al-Ifadah during Hajj?

Answer

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

Tawaf al-Ifadah is a pillar (rukn) of Hajj, and without it, Hajj is incomplete.

✿ If a person omits Tawaf al-Ifadah out of ignorance or lack of awareness, it is obligatory for him to return and perform it — even if this means coming back from his home country.

✿ Until he performs Tawaf al-Ifadah, it is not permissible for him to have marital relations with his wife, because he has not yet achieved Tahallul Thani (the second and complete release from Ihram).

Tahallul Thani is only achieved after performing Tawaf al-Ifadah.

✿ In addition, Sa’i between Ṣafā and Marwah is also obligatory if it has not been done earlier with Tawaf al-Qudum. This applies to all types of Hajj — Tamattuʿ, Qirān, or Ifrād.
