Ruling on Omitting “As-Ṣalātu Khayrun Minan-Nawm” in the Fajr Adhan

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

If a Mu’adhdhin, whether unintentionally or deliberately, omits the phrase "As-Ṣalātu Khayrun Minan-Nawm" (Prayer is better than sleep) during the Fajr Adhan, what is the effect on the Adhan?

❀ Answer:

✦ The omission results in the Adhan being incomplete, as this phrase is a specific part of the Fajr Adhan.

✿ Significance of the Phrase:

The addition of "As-Ṣalātu Khayrun Minan-Nawm" is:

  • Specifically legislated for the Fajr Adhan.
  • A sunnah mu’akkadah (emphasized Sunnah) as practiced in the time of the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Reported in authentic Ahadith, such as from Abu Mahdhurah رضي الله عنه, who narrated that the Prophet ﷺ taught him this exact phrase for the Fajr Adhan.

✦ Legal Ruling:

  • If the phrase is omitted deliberately, it is blameworthy and contrary to the Sunnah.
  • If forgotten, the Adhan remains valid, but it is considered deficient because a prescribed Sunnah element was missed.

✔ Summary:

“As-Ṣalātu Khayrun Minan-Nawm” is an essential Sunnah part of the Fajr Adhan.
② Omitting it results in an incomplete Adhan, although it does not invalidate the Adhan.
③ The omission should be avoided, especially intentionally, as it contradicts the established Sunnah.
