Ruling on Offering Salah While Needing to Relieve Oneself

❀ Ruling on Performing Salah While Suppressing the Need to Urinate ❀

Compiled by:
Qari Usama bin Abdussalam
Translated from Urdu

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on offering Salah while holding in urine?

❖ Answer:

It is not correct at all to offer Salah while suppressing the need to urinate. Islam does not permit such an act. If someone performs Salah in this state, it is impermissible. A clear Hadith is presented as evidence:

حدثنا أبو الفضل محمد بن إبراهيم المزكي... عن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: لا يحل لرجل يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر أن يصلي وهو حقن حتى يخفف
Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 22295

Translation:

It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"It is not permissible for one who believes in Allah and the Last Day to perform Salah while he is holding in urine until he relieves himself."

Similarly, if food is prepared or served, then one should eat first, and then perform Salah. The following Hadith serves as evidence:

أخبرنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن يعقوب... قالت: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: لا يصلى بحضرة الطعام، ولا هو يدافع الأخبثان
Musnad Ibn Rahawayh – Hadith 1169
Sunan al-Kubra (al-Bayhaqi) – Hadith 4805
Sahih Ibn Hibban – Hadith 2073
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah – Hadith 933
Al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) – Hadith 599
(Graded Hasan)

Translation:
Qasim bin Muhammad رضي الله عنه
narrated:
"We were with Umm al-Mu'minin ‘A’ishah رضي الله عنها when food was brought. Qasim bin Muhammad stood to pray, and she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Do not pray in the presence of food, nor while resisting the urge to relieve oneself.'"

✿ Summary:

✔ It is impermissible to offer Salah while suppressing the need to urinate or defecate.
✔ One should not pray when food is served and desires to eat, but rather eat first.
✔ Both situations distract the mind and heart, preventing proper concentration (khushu‘) in prayer.
