Ruling on Offering Salah at Its Appointed Early Time During Study Hours

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

I am a college student, and during study hours, I am unable to perform the Zuhr and ‘Asr prayers at their earliest prescribed time in congregation. It is very difficult for me to do so. What is the ruling for my situation?

❀ Answer:

✦ It is not truly difficult; with determination and effort, it can be done—In shāʾ Allāh.
The early time of prayer, especially in congregation, is greatly emphasized in Islamic teachings. Though study is important, salah holds a higher priority, and a sincere effort must be made to perform it in its proper time and with congregation if possible.

✿ Importance of Early and Congregational Prayer:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The most beloved deeds to Allah are the ones performed at their proper times."
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim)

And Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا

(Surah al-Nisa: 103)
"Indeed, the prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed times."

Delaying prayer unnecessarily or missing it in congregation without a valid Shar‘i excuse is highly discouraged and potentially sinful.

✿ Practical Advice:

  • Try to plan your study schedule around the prayer times.
  • Seek permission from teachers if needed for a brief break.
  • Perform prayer with short surahs if time is limited.
  • Even if congregation is missed due to genuine constraints, do not delay the prayer beyond its time.

With sincere intention and effort, Allah will surely make the way easy.

✔ Summary:

Strive to perform prayers at their earliest time, especially Zuhr and ‘Asr.
Do not neglect or delay prayer due to studies.
With determination, managing both study and salah is very possible.
Wallāhu Aʿlam.
