Ruling on Offering Qasr Prayer in Mina During Hajj Days

Ruling on Shortening the Prayers (Qasr) in Mina During the Days of Hajj
Source: Fatawa 'Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1

❖ Question

During the days of Hajj, should prayers be shortened (Qasr) in Mina, or should they be offered in full?

❖ Answer

During Hajj, prayers in Mina are to be shortened (Qasr)—that is, four-unit (Rak‘ah) prayers are to be performed as two Rak‘ahs. Imam Bukhari رحمه الله dedicated a separate chapter to this subject and cited several Hadiths as evidence.

❖ Narration of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas‘ood

(Bukhari 1082)

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas‘ood رضي الله عنه said:
I offered two Rak‘ahs (shortened prayer) in Mina with the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr and Umar During the early part of his caliphate, Uthman رضي الله عنه also led two Rak‘ahs, but later he completed them (four Rak‘ahs).

❖ Narration of Harithah ibn Wahb

(Bukhari 1083)

Harithah ibn Wahb reported:
The Prophet ﷺ led us in two Rak‘ahs of prayer in Mina, even though we were in a state of safety.

❖ Narration of Abdur-Rahman ibn Yazid

(Bukhari 1084)

Abdur-Rahman ibn Yazid said:
‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan رضي الله عنه led us in four Rak‘ahs in Mina. When this was reported to Abdullah ibn Mas‘ood رضي الله عنه, he said: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘oon.” Then he added: “I prayed two Rak‘ahs with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Mina, and also with Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهما. I wish I could have two accepted Rak‘ahs instead of those four.”

❖ Conclusion

The above narrations clearly demonstrate that shortening the prayer in Mina during the days of Hajj is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the consistent practice of the Rightly Guided Caliphs and the Companions

Therefore, Qasr (shortened) prayer should be performed in Mina during Hajj.
