Ruling on Nafl Prayers After the Fajr Adhān and Scholarly Opinions

Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadīyah, Vol. 1, p. 373

Question:

Can one perform nafl prayers such as Taḥiyyat al-Wuḍūʾ or Taḥiyyat al-Masjid after the Fajr adhān? Some people say that after the Fajr adhān, only the two Sunnahs of Fajr are permissible and no other nafl prayers.

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

This issue is one of scholarly difference, as recorded by Imām Ibn al-Mundhir and other scholars.

① Permissible Cases

◈ Performing Witr prayer after the adhān of Fajr is considered valid if it was missed.
◈ Imām Muḥammad ibn Naṣr al-Marwazī (رحمه الله) discussed this issue in detail in Qiyām al-Layl.

② Dominant View

The stronger opinion, however, is:
✔ After the adhān of Fajr, only the two Sunnahs of Fajr are allowed.
✘ Other prayers such as Taḥiyyat al-Masjid or Taḥiyyat al-Wuḍūʾ should not be performed.

Evidence from Ḥadīth

The Prophet ﷺ said:

لَا صَلَاةَ بَعْدَ الْفَجْرِ إِلَّا رَكْعَتَيْنِ
“After dawn breaks, there is no prayer except two rakʿahs (Sunnah of Fajr).”
(Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī, 1/321; from the narration of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما)

Opinions of the Scholars

◈ Imām ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mubārakpūrī (رحمه الله) wrote:

“The stronger opinion in my view is that those who say such prayers are disliked (makrūh) are correct, as the aḥādīth explicitly support this.”

◈ Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbdullāh Roparī (رحمه الله) also declared Taḥiyyat al-Masjid and other nafl after Fajr adhān as makrūh. (*Narrated by the five except al-Nasā
