Ruling on Mu’adhdhin Sending Salutations After Adhan

✿ The Mu’adhdhin Sending Salutations After Adhan – A Critical Analysis ✿
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ The Mu’adhdhin Reciting Ṣalāt and Salām After Adhan

There is no authentic Hadith that clearly establishes the Mu’adhdhin sending Ṣalāt and Salām upon the Prophet ﷺ loudly or individually after giving the Adhan.

Some people believe this practice is included under the statement of the Prophet ﷺ:

إذا سمعتم النداء فقولوا مثل ما يقول المؤذن ثم صلوا علي
[For further detail, see: Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā by Ibn Taymiyyah 22/470; Mirqāt al-Mafātīḥ 1/423; al-Dīn al-Khāliṣ 2/88; Fiqh al-Sunnah 1/612; Tamām al-Minnah p. 158; Iṣlāḥ al-Masājid p. 133]

"When you hear the call (Adhan), say what the Mu’adhdhin says, then send blessings upon me."

Response:

In this Hadith, the listeners of the Adhan are addressed—those who hear the Mu’adhdhin. They are commanded to repeat after him and then send Ṣalāt upon the Prophet ﷺ. The Mu’adhdhin himself is not included in this directive. If he were, it would imply that he must repeat his own Adhan, which is illogical and unsupported.

❖ Giving Adhan Without Observing Tajwīd Rules

It is impermissible to deliver the Adhan in such a manner that alters the letters, vowel markings, or pauses, thereby causing deficiency or distortion.

[For details, see: Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī 6/230; al-Madkhal 3/249; al-Dīn al-Khāliṣ 2/92; al-Ibdāʿ fī Maḍārr al-Ibtidāʿ p. 176]

❖ Broadcasting Adhan via Tape Recorder in Place of a Mu’adhdhin

This practice is prohibited due to the following reasons:

① It contradicts the explicit instruction of the Prophet ﷺ:

فإذا حضرت الصلاة فليؤذن لكم أحدكم
[Bukhārī 628; Muslim 674]

"When the time for prayer comes, let one of you call the Adhan."

② It deprives Mu’adhdhins of the reward and virtue Allah has granted them.

③ It opposes the continuous and inherited practice of the Ummah.

④ It lacks intention (niyyah), which is a condition for valid Adhan.

⑤ It opens the door to entertainment, innovations, and non-seriousness entering acts of worship and rituals in Islam.

❖ Kissing the Thumbs and Placing Them on the Eyes During Adhan

The narration which states that a person who, upon hearing the words “Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan Rasūl Allāh”, says:

"Marḥaban bi-ḥabībī wa qurrati ʿaynī Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdillāh,"
then kisses his thumbs and touches them to his eyes, and as a result will never suffer from eye ailments—this narration is weak.
[al-Ḍaʿīfah 73]

Imām al-Sakhāwī رحمه الله comments after citing this narration:

ولا يصح فى المرفوع من كل هذا شيئ
[al-Maqāṣid al-Ḥasanah p. 384; al-Maṣnūʿ fī Maʿrifat al-Ḥadīth al-Mawḍūʿ 300; Kashf al-Khafāʾ 2/206]

"None of this is authentically proven as a Marfūʿ narration."

Thus, this practice is not established in the Sharīʿah, and is classified as a bidʿah (innovation). It should therefore be avoided.

❖ Can the Mu’adhdhin Also Lead the Congregational Prayer?

Yes, it is permissible for the Mu’adhdhin to also lead the prayer after delivering the Adhan and Iqāmah.
[al-Fatāwā al-Islāmiyyah 1/328]
