Ruling on Missed Witr Prayer – When Should It Be Offered?

✿ Sourced from: Aḥkām wa Masā’il: Ṣalāh Section, Volume 1, Page 231

❖ Question

If a person misses Witr prayer, can he offer it in the morning? What is the Shar‘i ruling in such a case?

✦ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, Ammā ba‘d!

✔ If someone misses the Witr prayer, whether due to sleep or forgetfulness, he should offer it as soon as he remembers or wakes up.

❖ Supporting Hadith:

«مَنْ نَسِيَ صَلَاةً، أَوْ نَامَ عَنْهَا، فَكَفَّارَتُهَا أَنْ يُصَلِّيَهَا إِذَا ذَكَرَهَا»
“Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, its expiation is that he should pray it as soon as he remembers.”
[Muttafaqun ‘alayh – Mishkāt, Kitāb aṣ-Ṣalāh, Bāb Ta‘jīl aṣ-Ṣalawāt]

✿ Practical Application:

➤ If a person wakes up after Fajr, having missed Witr, or remembers it later in the day, he should:

Immediately make up the Witr prayer without delay.

✔ This rule applies to Witr as it is part of voluntary night worship, yet emphasized and closely linked to prescribed prayers.

✔ Conclusion:

❖ Missed Witr should be offered as soon as remembered, whether that is after Fajr or later in the day.
❖ Delaying further without cause is not permissible.
