Ruling on Making Up Prayers Missed Due to Medically Induced Menstruation

If a woman undergoes treatment that causes bleeding and she leaves prayer during this period, is she required to make up those prayers later or not?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
If a woman undergoes medical treatment to induce menstruation and as a result menstrual bleeding occurs, she is not required to make up the prayers she missed during that period.
This ruling is based on the principle: “A ruling is connected to its cause.”
Allah ﷻ says:
﴿وَيَسـَٔلونَكَ عَنِ المَحيضِ قُل هُوَ أَذًى﴾
(Sūrat al-Baqarah: 222)
“And they ask you concerning menstruation. Say: It is an impurity.”

❖ Question
If a woman undergoes treatment that causes bleeding and she leaves prayer during this period, is she required to make up those prayers later or not?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
If a woman undergoes medical treatment to induce menstruation and as a result menstrual bleeding occurs, she is not required to make up the prayers she missed during that period.
❖ Key Points
- Whenever menstrual blood is present, the related Islamic rulings apply.
- If a woman uses medicine or other means to stop menstruation, then since there is no menstrual blood present, she must pray and fast.
- In that case, she is not considered menstruating, and no make-up for fasts will be required.
❖ Underlying Principle
This ruling is based on the principle: “A ruling is connected to its cause.”
Allah ﷻ says:
﴿وَيَسـَٔلونَكَ عَنِ المَحيضِ قُل هُوَ أَذًى﴾
(Sūrat al-Baqarah: 222)
“And they ask you concerning menstruation. Say: It is an impurity.”
- As long as this impurity (menstrual blood) is present, the associated rulings will apply.
- Once it ceases, the rulings will also cease.
