Ruling on Mani, Mazi, and Wadi

This content is extracted from the book "500 Questions and Answers for Women", based on the fatwas of the scholars of Haramain and translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

Question

A person from Egypt, currently residing in Riyadh, has written to us. He asks:
"After urinating, a white fluid (Mazi) is discharged from me. What is the ruling regarding my Wudu, and what is the correct way to perform it? I often shake my private part after Istinja (cleaning after urination), but some people have advised that this is incorrect and harmful to health. I sometimes use tissue paper and wait for a while, but at times, I am outside or in the restroom when the call for prayer is made. I then rush to perform Wudu and pray, but I constantly fear that my prayer might not be complete. Please guide me with a proper answer, may Allah bless you."

Answer

It is not appropriate to engage in excessive scrupulousness in such matters. Shaking or squeezing the private part is a dangerous practice as it may lead to Silsilat al-Bawl (a condition of constant urination) and Waswas (unnecessary doubts). When you urinate, you should simply perform Istinja (cleaning) using water or stones.

Shaking or squeezing the private part to prevent any further discharge is incorrect and not permissible. Such actions can lead to Waswas and urinary issues. Therefore, you should avoid this practice. Once you finish urinating, simply clean yourself with water or use stones (at least three times or more) until the impurity is removed. This is sufficient.

As for the white fluid that discharges after urination, it could either be Mazi or Wadi, and both have the same ruling as urine.
  1. Mazi:
    • It is usually discharged due to arousal and should be cleaned by washing the private part. When cleaning Mazi, it is also necessary to wash the testicles along with the private part, as instructed in Hadith.
  2. Wadi:
    • This is a white fluid discharged after urination due to some physical exertion. It is also treated like urine, requiring the cleaning of the part of the private area it contacts.
In both cases, simply wash the affected area, perform Istinja, and proceed with your Wudu. This is sufficient, and there is no need for excessive scrupulousness or fear about the validity of your prayer.

Note:
The above is based on the fatwa of Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin Baz (رحمه الله).
