Ruling on Making Up Missed Sunnahs of Ẓuhr and Their Order

⫷ Ruling on Making Up Missed Sunnahs of Ẓuhr and the Order of Their Performance ⫸

❖ Question:

If the four Sunnah Rakʿāt of Ẓuhr before the congregational prayer are missed, should they be performed after the Farḍ before the two confirmed Sunnahs (mu’akkadah), or should the two be offered first and the four made up later?

❖ Answer by Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh:

In this matter, the worshipper has a valid choice regarding the order of Sunnah prayers:

✔ One may choose to first pray the two Sunnah Mu’akkadah (after Farḍ), followed by the four missed Sunnahs.
✔ Alternatively, one may first make up the four Sunnahs that were missed, and then offer the two Sunnah Mu’akkadah.

Both practices are permissible and in accordance with Sharīʿah.

❖ Summary:

✔ The worshipper is allowed flexibility in the sequence when making up missed Sunnah prayers.
✔ He may perform either the two or the four firstboth are acceptable in Islamic law.
