Ruling on Making Up Missed Maghrib During Isha Congregation

Ruling on Missed Maghrib During Isha Congregation

Source: Fatawa ‘Ilmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitab al-Salah, p. 295

Question:
If someone has missed the Maghrib prayer and arrives at the mosque while the congregation for Isha is ongoing, should he:

  • Perform three Rak‘ahs with the intention of Maghrib and then end his prayer, joining the congregation afterward?
  • Or should he join the Isha congregation with the intention of Isha and offer Maghrib afterward?
    (Question by: Muhammad Shahid Memon)

Answer:
Wa ‘alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh!

Alhamdulillah, wa-s-salatu wa-s-salamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba‘d:

Since the Isha prayer consists of four Rak‘ahs, therefore:

◈ One should join the congregation with the intention of Isha.
◈ After completing the Isha prayer, the person should then make up the missed Maghrib prayer separately.

📌 Important Note:
Since Maghrib consists of three Rak‘ahs and has a distinct congregational structure,
it is not valid to offer Maghrib during the Isha congregation with the intention of Maghrib.
