Question

What is the Shariah ruling regarding reciting the Qur’an aloud in the mosque in such a way that it disturbs other worshippers?

Answer

Alhamdulillah, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!

If a person recites the Qur’an aloud in the mosque and his voice causes disturbance or discomfort to other worshippers, reciters, or those engaged in prayer, then reciting aloud in this manner is haram.

The Prophet ﷺ forbade such behavior.

Evidence from Hadith

Imam Malik (RH) narrated in Al-Muwatta from Bayadhi (Furwah ibn ‘Amr) (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ once entered the mosque while people were engaged in prayer and their recitation voices were loud. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«اِنَّ الْمُصَلِّی يُنَاجِی رَبَّهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَا يُنَاجِيهِ وَلَا يَجْهَرْ بَعْضُكُمْ عَلٰى بَعْضٍ بِالْقُرْآنِ»
(Sunan Abi Dawood, Kitab al-Salah, Bab Raf‘ al-Sawt bi’l-Qira’ah fi Salat al-Layl, Hadith 1332; Musnad Ahmad 2/67)

Translation:
"Indeed, the one praying is conversing privately with his Lord, so let him see with what he converses with Him, and let not some of you overpower others with loud Qur’anic recitation."

Summary

❀ Loud recitation of the Qur’an in the mosque is not permissible if it causes disturbance or distracts others.
