Summary of Ruling
1. Loud Qur’an Recitation at the Deceased’s Home
- Verdict: This practice is a bid‘ah (religious innovation) as it has no basis in the time of the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions.
- Reason:
- Forces everyone present to listen, even if they are engaged in unsuitable activities.
- Can lead to disrespect for the Qur’an by mixing it with worldly distractions.
- Correct way is for individuals to recite privately for reflection and solace.
2. Condolence Gatherings (Ta‘ziyah Majlis)
- Verdict: Sitting in an organized manner to receive condolences is also a bid‘ah.
- Correct practice:
- Family of the deceased should avoid arranging such gatherings.
- Meetings for condolence should happen naturally, without formal setup.
3. Mourning Practices and Prohibitions
- Prohibited:
- Wailing (nīyāhah), lamentation, and preparing special meals for mourners.
- Prophetic warning: Wailing women who do not repent will face severe humiliation in the Hereafter (Muslim 934).
4. Effect on the Deceased
- The deceased experiences distress (not necessarily punishment) due to family’s excessive mourning.
- “Punishment” here refers to emotional pain, similar to how “travel is a piece of torment” means hardship, not divine penalty.
5. Final Advice
- Avoid all death-related innovations.
- Focus on deeds that genuinely benefit the deceased:
- Supplication (du‘ā’)
- Charity (ṣadaqah)
- Fulfilling their vows and debts
