Can a Mu’adhdhin Leave the Mosque After Calling the Adhān?
Source: Fatāwā Amun Pūrī by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amun Pūrī
The Question
Is it permissible for the mu’adhdhin (caller to prayer) to leave the mosque after giving the adhān?
The Answer
Whether it is the mu’adhdhin or any other person sitting in the mosque, it is not permissible to leave the mosque without a valid excuse after the adhān has been given.
It is narrated that when the mu’adhdhin gave the adhān, a man stood up and left the mosque. Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه kept watching him, and the Prophet ﷺ said:
“This man has disobeyed Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 655)
However, if there is a valid excuse, then leaving the mosque after the adhān is permissible.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 629; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 605)
Conclusion
- Leaving the mosque after the adhān without excuse is an act of disobedience to the Prophet ﷺ.
- With a valid excuse, it is permissible.
