Shari'ah Ruling on Taking Bad Omen from a House and Considering It Unlucky

Question:
A person began living in a house, after which he and his family members suffered from several illnesses and troubles. Due to this, he considers the house unlucky. Based on this assumption, is it permissible for him, according to Shari'ah, to leave that house?

Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd!

Sometimes, it happens that certain houses, certain mounts, or certain women, due to Allah’s divine wisdom, become a cause of harm or the loss of opportunities for benefit.

◈ Therefore, if a person resides in a house where he continually faces hardships and distress, it is completely permissible in Shari'ah for him to sell that house and move to another one.

◈ It is possible that in the new house, Allah ﷻ may grant him goodness and blessings.

Hadith:
The Noble Prophet ﷺ said:

« الشُّؤْمُ فِی ثَلَاثَةٍ فِی الْفَرَسِ وَالْمَرْأَةِ وَالدَّارِ »
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Jihād wa-s-Siyar, Bāb Mā Dhukira Fī Shū’m al-Faras, Ḥadīth: 2858; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Salām, Bāb al-Ṭiyarah wa-al-Fāl wa-Mā Yakūnu Fīhi al-Shū’m, Ḥadīth: 2225)

Translation: "Bad omen can be in three things: the horse, the woman, and the house."

◈ This ḥadīth indicates that in some specific mounts, wives, or houses, there can indeed be an element of bad omen (unlucky effects).

◈ However, it must be remembered that all of this occurs only according to the decree and wisdom of Allah Almighty. Allah ﷻ has destined such causes in a manner that prompts a person to move towards a better place or condition.
