Shariah Ruling on Delayed Arrival at Muzdalifah — Regarding Prayer and Wuqūf
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām
Some people lost their way to Muzdalifah, and when they got near, they stopped there. They prayed Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ at 1:00 AM, and then entered Muzdalifah at Fajr adhān time. Is anything required of them? Please issue a fatwa.
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
Nothing is required of such people, because they entered Muzdalifah at the time of Fajr adhān and prayed Fajr there in the darkness.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«مَنْ شَهِدَ صَلَاتَنَا هٰذِهِ، وَوَقَفَ مَعَنَا حَتَّی نَدْفَعَ، وَقَدْ وَقَفَ قَبْلَ ذٰلِكَ بِعَرَفَةَ لَيْلًا أَوْ نَهَارًا فَقَدْ تَمَّ حَجُّهُ وَقَضٰى تَفَثَهُ»
“Whoever joins us in this prayer of ours, and stands with us until we depart, having previously stood at ʿArafah by night or by day, his Hajj is complete and he has fulfilled his rites.”
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Kitāb al-Manāsik, Bāb Man Lam Yudrik ʿArafah, Ḥadīth: 1950; Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Bāb Mā Jāʾa fī Man Adraka al-Imām bijamʿ, Ḥadīth: 891 — wording from al-Tirmidhī)
However, they did commit an error in performing ʿIshāʾ prayer after midnight. The time for ʿIshāʾ ends at midnight, as proven in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim from the narration of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (RA), in which the Prophet ﷺ stated that the end time for ʿIshāʾ prayer is midnight.
