Ruling on Knowingly Performing Salah Without Wudu

Source: Fatawa Ameenpuri — Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Ameenpuri

❖ Question

What is the ruling on knowingly performing salah without wudu?

❖ Answer

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

Purification (taharah) is a condition for the validity of salah. Whoever performs salah without wudu, his prayer is invalid, and he must repeat it. Furthermore, if one deliberately performs salah without wudu or tayammum and deems it permissible, this constitutes kufr (disbelief).

◈ Evidence

  • ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud رضي الله عنه said:

"مفتاح الصلاة الطهور وإحرامها التكبير وانقضاؤها التسليم"
"The key to salah is purification; its opening is the takbir (Allahu Akbar) and its conclusion is the taslim (salam)."
(al-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi 2/16, 173 – authentic chain)

Imam al-Bayhaqi رحمه الله declared this narration authentic.

  • Hafiz al-Nawawi (676 AH) رحمه الله stated:

"أجمعت الأمة على أنه من صلى محدثا مع إمكان الوضوء فصلاته باطلة وتجب إعادتها بالإجماع"
"The Ummah has reached consensus that if someone performs salah in a state of hadath (without wudu), while being able to make wudu, his salah is invalid and must be repeated — this is by consensus."
(al-Majmuʿ 4/264)

◈ Conclusion

  • Salah without wudu is invalid.
  • The person must repeat the salah.
  • Considering it permissible to perform salah without wudu or tayammum, knowingly and without excuse, is disbelief.
