Ruling on Kissing the Noble Qur’an out of Reverence

❀ Shar‘i Ruling on Kissing the Noble Muṣḥaf ❀
⎯ Referenced from: Fatāwā al-Dīn al-Khāliṣ, Vol. 1, p. 125 ⎯

❖ Question:

Is there any Islamic ruling concerning the act of kissing the Muṣḥaf (the Noble Qur'an)?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allāh. To proceed:

① No Explicit Report from the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions

There is no authentic narration from the Prophet ﷺ or his noble companions (raḍiyallāhu ‘anhum) that confirms the act of kissing the Muṣḥaf.
The Qur’an was revealed for reflection (tadabbur), reverence (ta‘ẓīm), recitation (tilāwah), and implementation (ʿamal), as mentioned in:

  • Fatāwā al-Lajnah al-Dā’imah (4/121–122)
  • Majmū‘ Fatāwā (23/65)

Statement of ‘Ikrimah (raḍiyallāhu ‘anhu)

Ikrimah ibn Abī Jahl (raḍiyallāhu ‘anhu) said:

“This is the speech of my Lord and His declaration.”

It is reported from him that he would open the Muṣḥaf, place his forehead on it, and kiss it.
However, it is not permissible to declare this as Sunnah or mustaḥabb (recommended practice).

③ Imām Ibn Taymiyyah’s (raḥimahullāh) Position

In Fatāwā al-Kubrā (1/49, Mas’alah no. 1), Imām Ibn Taymiyyah (raḥimahullāh) stated:

“There is no narrated report from the Salaf regarding standing for the Muṣḥaf or kissing it.”
Although the action of kissing is narrated from ‘Ikrimah, it cannot be classified as obligatory or Sunnah.

Opinion of the Jurists

In Mirqāt (5/14), it is briefly mentioned that kissing the Muṣḥaf is permissible, but it is not considered an obligatory or Sunnah act.

✅ Conclusion:

Kissing the Muṣḥaf is neither obligatory nor a Sunnah practice, as there is no evidence for it from the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions.
✦ If someone kisses it out of love and reverence, there is no harm,
✦ But considering it part of the religion or a recommended practice is incorrect.
Avoiding it is preferable, to prevent falling into bid‘ah (innovation) or non-Sunnah actions.
